In honor of Halloween, five classic images that scared me when I first saw them, and that still hold fascination, years later, for their macabre, nightmarish content.

1. Judith beheading Holofernes
2. Dante and Virgil in Hell (also a great early example of fanfic)
3. The Tower of Babel
4. danse macabre from Bergman's Seventh Seal (see also: Death playing chess in 'Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure;' Woody Allen's classic 'Love and Death' as loving tributes to this film.
5. The seven-headed dragon and the beast from a medieval French tapestry. Somehow, illustrating the apocalypse in needlepoint makes it that much more terrifying.
