Something that's been rattling around in my head for a while, that I finally found the words for:

Star Trek is the lingua franca of (Western, English-speaking) fandom. Is everyone fluent in it? No. Do most people have at least passing familiarity? Yes. Have I ever entered into any nerd or even nerd-adjacent space and not been able to find at least one person who is happy to geek out about it? Not that I can recall.

I'm not saying everyone likes or even knows Star Trek. I'm just saying that in my experience, if you meet a fannish sort of person, and you're trying to find commonality, Star Trek has a very good chance of being the shared language you need.

There's no point to this post; I had the thought and decided to post it on the internet, as one does.

Reading

Read more of The Church of Frendo by Adam Cesare (Clown in a Cornfield #3). I was apparently wrong about the past time period, which is honestly just confusing at this point because all the pieces haven't really come together. There was also a minor character who was a pro wrestler and I kind of hated it, partly because of the cringe roid rage angle, but also because of several misused wrestling terms that just feel like he doesn't know wrestling and also didn't care enough to do much research. Idk.
Ficwise, I somehow got sucked into Duang With You fic, specifically TongPrae. Not sure why they suddenly hit me, but it's been a nice change of pace since they're largely just a very sweet pair and so is the fic lol

Watching

The roommate and I finished Match Point. So so good! One of my top watches of the year for sheer happy feelings while watching it. (And two dad apologies, damn!) I really loved TeshowPing and I'm very excited to see more of them in the future.
The roommate and I started watching The Trainee. OffGun are not one of my faves, but I'm enjoying it a lot. The intern friend group is great, with lots of fun shenanigans. I was not expecting the GL angle and I'm not sure where that's going tbh.
The roommate, best friend, and I watched the latest episode of Your Third. The wedding was super cute and I'm enjoying SarmJam's honeymoon phase lol Also JT cameo as Ohm's guy?!?!
The roommate, best friend, and I watched the latest episode of You Maniac. I'm glad Ten finally sort of got his shit together with Pun. Very funny that Pun has known all along, even if I already suspected as much lol Seems like Dean may be getting his shit together too, we'll see if Moth is on board.
The roommate, best friend, and I watched the latest episode of Weirdo 101. Man, SeaKeen are just so cute. I really enjoyed seeing how Keen's family issues finally came to a head, and actually worked out well! With an apology from the dad, wow!
The roommate, best friend, and I watched the latest episode of The D Dorm. Nat dressed as a Vulcan!! A little disappointed he and Max didn't really interact, since I don't think Nat's character is one that will reappear. But TutorYim are very fun so far, and we're getting some juicy backstory for NetJJ.
The roommate, best friend, and I watched the latest episode of Mr. Fanboy. A lot happening in this one! Nine's really going off the deep end (pun intended lol), and that's very fun. Very satisfying to see Wan tearing his pictures off the wall finally. Plus ThirdWan kiss! And surprise established RenjiTime ahhh!!
The roommate, best friend, and I watched a little more Perfect 10 Liners. We're onto FaifaWine's arc, which I'm very excited about!
I'm trying to do a horror movie a day in October this year! I'm already a little behind, but so far:
- 500 MPH Storm. Fine for a disaster movie. Low budget in a way that made it hard to believe the storm was as destructive as they said, but not too cringe.
- 2-Headed Shark Attack. Mostly just an excuse for girls in bikinis, as many of these kinds of movies tend to be, but not bad overall. I did find it interesting that the movie itself really didn't seem interested in how the shark came to be, well, two headed.
- Piranhacanda. There were a lot of disparate groups getting killed, and I kind of wish they'd tied it all together better. The CGI snake was pretty bad too, but overall ok.
- 3-Headed Shark Attack. Another head, wow! I liked the more eco/science bent of this one, even if it came off a little heavy handed due to the not stellar acting.
- 5-Headed Shark Attack. Bet you thought it would be 4, huh? Well, it kind of was, since the shark had four heads in the front and that's what the characters mostly saw. But! It also had another head for a tail. Yeah, it was just as bad as it sounds XD
- I started watching From the Depths. which had a ton of good comments on youtube. It is not the kind of shark movie I was expecting, it's way more about mental health I guess? Seems very well made, but it was kind of giving me anxiety, so we'll see if I come back to finish it.
- I also started watching Monster Python, and pretty much immediately gave up because I could not stand the dubbing. May see if there's a subbed version, because it did look interesting.

Listening

Listened to several episodes of Happier with Gretchen Rubin and the most recent Ouija Broads.

Writing

Finished my ChermChey fic for iddyiddybangbang ! Barely over the word count minimum, but I'm pleased with it. Even if no one else will read it lol

A good book, though not an enjoyable one. It's like reading the news two weeks from now, and it's not good news.

It did, however, pair well with the other book I was reading at the time, Let This Radicalize You: Organizing and the Revolution of Reciprocal Care by Kelly Hayes and Mariame Kaba, about how to organize against a hostile state and the radical act of reciprocal care.

Contains: authoritarianism, the surveillance state, rigged elections, institutional reliance on AI, carceral violence, state violence, mob violence, climate change, grief.

my dear friend

fiachairecht has issues with the new create entries page, so i wrote a userstyle to help make it bearable for her. she told me that other people are having similar issues with the updated page, so i'm sharing the userstyle!

it'll look something like this (under a cut because it's a big ass screenshot):

full page screenshot of the new dreamwidth create entries page. it's been slightly restyled to be less wide and more narrow, and to collapse the new metadata panels into one long column.

this is a userstyle, which means you have to have a browser extension installed to use it. the extension is called stylus and can be installed on firefox, google chrome, and anything that's based on firefox (waterfox, librewolf, etc) and chrome (edge, brave [ew], vivaldi, opera, etc). the extension doesn't seem to support safari, but if you're using safari i do recommend a different browser since it kinda always lags behind modern browser features.

i have the userstyle hosted on github (yes yes i know github's uptime is terrible, i'll put it somewhere else later). to install it with stylus, click the button that says "raw" and it should open a stylus tab that helps you install it.

oh also i only tested this with tropo red and purple, so i have no clue if this works at all on the other site themes. i'm happy to make it work with other themes on request.

So uh, I guess I'm going to be shouting about the Get Vale Out Of Tampa gofundme again? But for good reasons!

I had an interview today with an organization that helps trans folks move out to the PNW. The woman who talked to me is pretty sure she might be able to get most of a living situation set up by the time I leave Seattle in December? Somehow?

So yeah, I'm going to be shouting about this again because I had to use some of this money to pick up my other pair of glasses (these ones are reading glasses) and now I need to start getting money together to cover quickkly upcoming moving costs!

Because I need to vent but don't want to hurt people.

It just really gets under my skin when someone takes a general topic, makes it personal within the confines of the conversation, then gets mad at you for not being particularly sensitive to their situation when you understood that as an example. Like, I get what the person was upset about externally, but you were the one who brought the personal into the general topic, and then you wonder why I don't frequently have (express) opinions about stuff I know we don't see eye to eye on.

It just makes me want to give up on knowing anyone when it seems like I'm always the one managing other people's feelings and nobody apologizes to me when they've actually hurt me, only when they think I should be mad.
